Annual open-air library: reading books, listening cabinets, daily reading sessions, creative workshops and literary evenings led by Comp.Marius. Established on the 'Zomer van Antwerpen' since 2010. Every summer, for 2 months! A special corona-edition of the Summer Library takes place during the summer of 2020, hosted by the public Library Permeke, in Antwerp (BE).
Architecture and concept
Inspired on the one hand by an existing semicircular wooden seating stand which Comp.Marius has already been using in the open air for ten years, and on the other by a great love of books and their readers, the company has now built an open-air library (see ‘about marius/mobile constructions’). Unlike a public library, this one holds a personal collection and the books are catalogued using a highly individual system. It is conceived as a ‘reading room’, where the books can only be read or consulted on the spot, on a comfortable curved seating stand that has back supports and table-tops with room for 60 readers.
Unlike a public library, this one holds a personal collection and the books are catalogued using a highly individual system.
Since 2013 the collection is on childhood: for the smallest children who are still in the midst of it and for the adults who are in search of it. Two thousand prints and reading books are arranged alphabetically according to the name of the main character from the book. Listening corners offer a selected choice of entertaining radio plays.
During the first period (2010-2012) the book collection of imaginary Walter Verbeeck -first visitor of ‘Zomer van Antwerpens’ and avid book collector who decided one day to explore the wide world- was the guiding principle of this Summer Library. More than 5000 books and stories about art, science and adventure were catalogued according to the reading time needed to read the book: from thick to thin.
